OWECO Power Output Calculator

Power Calculator

OWECO basic Power Output Calculator (MS Excel required) provides single OWEC® module electrical power expressed in kW kilowatts. On the maps, click blue or white dots that connect to wave activity data. Some links may be temporarily inactive. Others require further selection for wave Height, Period, or animation. Some links do not supply P values. For these the most energetic waves are generally characterized beginning with nearly identical Imperial H (feet) and P (seconds) numerals and then when the value for H is greater or less than P. The latter condition dominates. Presently, user selected H and P values are manually input to blue cells of the Calculator. Electrical generation estimate of a single OWEC® unit displays in yellow cell. Calculator data applies to comparatively assessing module scaling factors and power output. Basic version uses only a “Typical” column, shown in sample. It excludes available “Minimum” and “Maximum” data relating seasonal wave variation, annual conditions duration, electricity kWh selling price, materials, and financials. In the Calculator, conformally scalable module size is specified as a function of buoy diameter. In turn, the full length of buoy driveshaft reciprocating stroke is related to wave Height. Buoys’ height widens its wave response extents to about one-half wave H maximum stroke. Conservative basis is buoy diameter equals two thirds wave Height.
